What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Contact forms

If you use a contact form on this site, the information you submit is sent to us to respond to your message. We do not use it for any other purpose.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

Advertising (Google AdSense)

This site displays ads served by Google AdSense. Google and its partners use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this or other websites. You can opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google’s Ads Settings: https://adssettings.google.com. Learn more about how Google uses data from sites that use its services: https://policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

Affiliate links (Amazon Associates)

Some links on this site (including “Shop Lay’s on Amazon” buttons) are Amazon affiliate links. If you click one and make a purchase, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you, as part of the Amazon Associates Program. We do not collect or see any personal or payment information from these purchases — that transaction happens entirely on Amazon’s site, under Amazon’s own privacy policy.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, a Ko-fi support widget, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Analytics

We may use analytics tools (such as Google Analytics) to understand how visitors use the site — for example, which pages are viewed and how long visitors stay. This data is aggregated and is not used to personally identify you.

Snacky Chip (mobile game)

Snacky Chip is our companion mobile game, available on Google Play and on our website. It is designed to be suitable for all ages. Here’s what it collects:

Leaderboard. If you submit a score, we store the name you type in, your score, and the game mode (Classic or Ranch) in our database. This is not tied to any account — you can enter any name you like. We do not store your IP address alongside your score; we briefly use it (for about 5 minutes) only to prevent spam submissions.

Analytics. The game sends anonymous gameplay events (game started, game over, boss defeated, achievement unlocked) to Google Analytics, including your score, level, and game mode. This is not linked to your name or any personal identifier from the game itself. See Google’s privacy policy for how they handle analytics data: https://policies.google.com/privacy.

Locally on your device. Your unlocked skins, achievements, and preferences are saved only on your device and are never transmitted to us.

No accounts, no ads, no in-app purchases. Snacky Chip does not require an account, does not show ads, and (as of this writing) has no in-app purchases.

Children. The only information submitted in the game is a self-chosen leaderboard name; we ask all players not to make it identifying.

Who we share your data with

We share data with the following third parties as described above: Google (AdSense advertising, and Analytics), Amazon (Associates affiliate links), Automattic/Gravatar (comment avatars), and any spam-detection service used to screen comments. We do not sell your personal data.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

Snacky Chip leaderboard entries (name, score, mode) are retained indefinitely to keep the leaderboard functioning, unless you contact us to request removal.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, have left comments, or have a leaderboard entry, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where we send your data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service. Advertising and analytics data is processed by Google as described above.
