Origin Story: Sour cream has been a staple of Eastern European and Germanic cooking for centuries, pairing naturally with the sharp sweetness of roasted onion. The combination migrated west from Bavaria as a beloved potato topping before Lay’s decided to engineer it into chip form. Rather than the sharp bite of raw onion, the Lay’s Flavor Department opted for the slow-caramelized depth that comes from roasting bulbs over low heat for hours, then folding that sweetness into cool sour cream to balance the edge.
