Flavor: Spicy Crayfish
Country: China (found in USA)
When Seen: August 2021
In a Bite: Shrimp and herbs with a tiny hint of spice and the scent of chives, chili and seafood
In a Haiku: Like mini lobster. Whether ‘Cray’ or ‘Craw’, no mind. From the mud to chips.
Origin Story: Little known fact: the classic Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers duet originally had a verse that went, “I say crawfish, you say crayfish.” The Lay’s Flavor Department decided to pay homage to “Shall We Dance”, which was a favorite film of Chairman Mao, with this flavor. Although we’re told that there was a small Cajun contingent in the office that was fighting to call this chip ‘spicy crawdaddy’. Don’t let anyone tell you that this tiny swamp critter is inferior to its more regal cousin, the spicy lobster.
