Origin Story: The Lay’s Flavor Department is well aware that durian is the final boss of fruit—a flavor so potent it’s banned in most hotels and public transport across Southeast Asia. While Taiwan previously charted this treacherous territory with their own durian release, the Thai team decided that ‘bold’ wasn’t enough; they wanted ‘delight.’ This resulted in an internal struggle between the product designers and the janitorial staff, the latter of whom requested a hazardous materials permit before the first prototype was even opened. The final result is a flavor that doesn’t just sit on the tongue—it makes a permanent residence there, daring the consumer to stand their ground against the King of Fruits.
