Origin Story: With one of the greatest wealth gaps in the world and a deeply ingrained social hierarchy, the Lay’s Flavor Department astutely recognized that your run-of-the-mill sour cream and onion variety would little satisfy the discerning taste buds of Thailand’s nouveau and vieux riche alike. However, sprinkling the same flavoring onto a ruffled chip and slapping the ‘Gourmet’ moniker on it might just do the trick–or at the very least, it would drive sales among those who pretend to be rich on Instagram.
