Flavor: Vintage Cheddar & Caramelized Onion
Country: United Arab Emirates
When Seen: November 2021
In a Bite: Lightly caramelized onions tossed with a generous portion of Limburger.
In a Haiku: Like old Birkenstocks. After a hot summer’s day. Foot fetishists bask.
Origin Story: A country known for its excessive luxury needs a luxurious potato chip. Enter Lay’s Gourmet line of chips. Opulence on a thinly sliced potato, this chip is above the staple cheese dusts that tend to grace Lay’s flavors. The Lay’s Flavor Department needed to signal that this flavor was superior, that it had spent months or maybe even years aging and developing ever more complex flavor profiles. Unfortunately, due to a mix up in the supply chain–thanks again COVID!–they actually received Limburger flavoring, one of the world’s stinkiest cheeses. Fun fact: the bacteria used to make Limburger is the same one that gives human feet their odor.
