Flavor: Japanese Seaweed
Country: Vietnam
When Seen: May 2023
In a Bite: Seaweed with a hint of sweetness, like sushi rice
In a Haiku: It’s not from China. Nor is it from Korea. This is from Japan.
Origin Story: Seaweed variety chips have long been popular in parts of Asia, from Thailand and Indonesia’s Nori flavor, to Taiwan’s Kyushu flavor. Supply chain limitations have made it difficult for the Lay’s team to source one single type of seaweed, such as Nori or Kyushu, so they have to deal with a hodgepodge of whatever they can get their hands on. Thus, the indistinct, Japanese Seaweed name.
