Flavor: Chesapeake Bay Crab Spice
Country: USA
When Seen: June 2021
In a Bite: Pretty much identical to Old Bay seasoning
In a Haiku: Crabs without the crab. Prepare for celery rush. Transport to the Bay.
Origin Story: Maryland is famous for its blue crabs sprinkled with Old Bay seasoning, but for those who can’t make the trip out to the Chesapeake Bay this summer, the Lay’s Flavor Department has brought the Bay to you–without the crab though. These chips are actually seafood free. They’ve also opted to use the Old Bay flavor combination without actually using Old Bay. Could be because they wanted to save on paying royalties, or perhaps they wanted to stick it to McCormick for firing the creator of the spice mix on religious grounds, only to buy his successfully independent company years later.
